Does bullying have long term effects on the lives of their victims?

What are some actions that define a bully? Bullying means to seek harm, or intimidate.

Bullying has been a social injustice problem for many decades now, and is often imagined to take place within schooling systems. A bully is often described as someone older, who picks on someone younger and smaller than them. However, this is not always the case as there are many different types of bullying that goes on within a school system. Such as Physical, Verbal, and Cyberbullying.  Just about everyone has seen, or experienced bullying at least once in their lifetime. However the severity and long term effects bullying has on their victims is what surprises people the most. Bullying can leave victims feeling lonley, isolated, depressed, and even suicidal. The severity of bullying needs to start to be taken more seriously as this is a serious matter.

Bullying and Suicide

If bullying leads to you, or someone you know, feeling suicidal, please call 1-800-273-8255 in the U.S., or visit IASP or Suicide.org to find a helpline in your country.

The experience of bullying in childhood can have profound effects on mental health in adulthood, particularly among youths involved in bullying. Anxiety plays a huge role in the long term effects of bullying that a victim may experience. Anxiety is caused by a big event or a buildup of smaller stressful life situations. In which may lead someone to feel anxious. According to the article "Effects of Bullying Last into Adulthood; Study Finds" from the NY Times. Researchers found that "victims of bullying in childhood were 4.3 times more likely to have an anxiety disorder as adults, compared to those with no history of bullying or being bullied" (Louis, Catherine Saint). Within this article it discusses how sometimes even a decade after the intimidation has ended there is an elevated risk that psychiatric trouble has extended into adulthood due to prior experiences. Consideration of the children who are victims of bullying must be taken into account as the worrying becomes excessive, to the point where symptoms of anxiety disorder begin to occur. All which result in the long term effects due to bullying.

Being sent a message like this can alter the overall feeling someone may have about themself. Leaving them to feel insecure, and depressed for future interaction. An interesting take on bullying said by Copeland in an article titled "Long-Term Effects Of Bullying: Pain Lasts Into Adulthood" written by Stephanie Pappas. Stated the idea that "what happens to kids when they're with other kids, their peers, is as important, if not more important then what happens at home" Copeland said. This idea comes to no surprise as kids spend most of their time at school, surrounded by their peers. Kids value others opinions which may be why these consequences stick with children throughout childhood, resulting in long lasting effects into adulthood.

The image posted above is an example of how anxiety starts at a young age for children who have experienced bullying at school. This image also supports Coupland's observation that what happens to kids when with their peers may be as important if not more important than what happens at home.

Bullying allows for some long term effects:

-Change in the overall feeling about themselves

-School work and relationships are altered

-Relationship with their friends and family are not as stable as they once were

-Significant decrease in one's physical health.

Just about everyone has seen, or experienced bullying at least once in their lifetime. It's the severity and long term effects bullying has on their victims that surprises people the most. Anxiety plays a huge role in the long term effects bullying has on children. Anxiety disorders begin to form as these interactions excessively repeat in the victims mind, ultimately leading into adulthood. Bullies around the world today continue to negatively impact the lives of their victims. Attention needs to be brought upon this topic, as these long term effects impact the future of these innocent victims.

BULLYING NEGATIVELY AFFECTS THE LIVES OF VICTIMS LONG TERM.
