Bullying in High School & how can we stop it?
Is Your Child a Target for Bullies? In this picture above, you can tell a girl looking over her left shoulder as four other girls are being judgmental for some reason.
From How Common Is Bullying they ask a question of "How Common is Bullying?" they say "About 20% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying nationwide, and also say students ages 12–18 who reported being bullied said they thought those who bullied," them for these reasons.
Such as, "Had the ability to influence other students’ perception of them (56%), Had more social influence (50%), Were physically stronger or larger (40%), and lastly Had more money (31%)." All of these examples were said by students on why they think they were bullied. Yes, there could be many more examples on why students are getting bullied but overall this is what the majority of the students have wrote and said why they have been bullied.
From the same website as well How Common Is Bullying In grades 9-12, "Nationwide, 19% of students in grades 9–12 report being bullied on school property in the 12 months prior to the survey." In the following places is where these kids have been bullied during the hours of the school day.
Some of these places are, hallway or stairwell (43.4%), classroom (42.1%), cafeteria (26.8%), outside on school grounds (21.9%), online or text (15.3%), bathroom or locker room (12.1%), and lastly you have somewhere else in the school building (2.1%). All of these locations have been reported by students in the grades of 9-12 and this is an eye opening to High Schools across the country as well as the administration staff. Keeping your eye out in these specific places will bring down the percentages in each place down.
With all of the following examples and percentages above you can see that there is many places where kids are getting bullied, harassed or hazed in any place or manor. There is many types of bullying that most people do not think about and a lot of them can lead to suicidal or even many other serious problems. As stated above we as human beings and also the administration staff can do their part of looking more frequently at those areas and numbers will go down.
From When My Daughter Told Me Was Being Bullied, I Didn't Believe Her it talks about how a moms kid came up to her and told her that she has been being bullied recently. The mom blew off the daughter and now it is one of her biggest regrets and she will never do it again and always listen to her daughter. Her daughter has ADHD and when she came home telling her that "all of the girls are mean" she had a hard time believing her because there has been incidents before. For example, she would always say My daughter tends to overdramatize things that happen to her. If she stubs her toe, it becomes "the worst day in the world!" If she gets one spelling word incorrect on her test, she says, “I’m the dumbest kid in the world.”
As all of this sounds like a miscommunication with her and her daughter and nothing to serious it really is. As stated before examples like this is something that can set something off and lead to a bad decision like suicidal etc. This is an example for everyone that "Never Ignore any signs from your friends, family or in this case your daughter." This happens everyday but this is just one scenario that has been sent out to all of us to help us make the right decision.
So many people can say this will never work by trying to talk to all of these students, there will still be so many incidents etc. Yes, there could be but incidents on percentage based will go down with talks and also being more on top of everything like looking out for bullies more often. As a country we can stop this by more talks in high school or even outside of the community to get parents involved so they know what to look for if their kid is a victim or the bully.
According to Stop Bullying on the Spot When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time." As a result of this high school freshman through seniors will see that teachers, administration etc. are on top of it quicker but due to "popularity" and "clout" kids or young adults will continue to do such actions. The website also states that from the help of "Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy."with the help of them coming in and talking to students we can prevent a lot of the bullying that goes on in the school grounds.
This is one technique and the most important that we can do as a country, community, and society to help prevent High School bullying across the United States and all countries. There is so many types of bullying and now with technology we see everything on the news or some other social media post. How do you feel when you see someone has taken their life because of depression from being bullied? Remember that feeling LETS MAKE A CHANGE.
