Are Schools really Preventing Bullying?

It is no surprise that bullying is still a problem in the schools across America. Bullying can happen in many forms such as face-to-face or cyberbully. Cyberbullying has become more popular due to the pandemic and its lasting affects. Everyone can agree that bullying is bad and that we should put an end to it but the schools across the country haven't really been fighting against bullying.

Many parents across the country who's child is a victim of bullying believe the school district didn't do enough to help prevent the problem. A couple parents from a school in Waldorf, Maryland believe the school district didn't try to solve the problem when it was reported.

The parents claimed to have warned the school with multiple incidents with the child and the schools solution was to only move the victim to another class without confronting the problem. Police deemed the incident as false accusations since no evidence was found.

Did the School do enough to help?

The school's solution to the problem was to move the kid to another class and separate them, many will say this is a great solution but the school doesn't account for lunch since many kids in the same grade share the same lunch and recess along with outside of school as well. A website called safe2say received over 80,000 and of that number reported was 32% of the reports was about bullying or cyberbullying. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports all the statistics reported from the safe2say website. Many needed to reach out to the website instead of confronting the school district because many feel the school doesn't do enough or have any programs to help with bullying. The National Association of School Psychologists recommends 1 therapists for every 500 kids but many schools don't have the luxury or are equipped with that personnel. With only 1 therapist available it makes it hard to try and help the student population when the person is outnumbered.

Many schools bring on enough teachers to have the class size ratio less than 30 to 1 so it becomes easier for them to do their job. Personally at my high school, we din't have enough counselors for the size of our school so it would take weeks to get switched out of a class or seek help creating your schedule.

What else could the school do?

Many schools raise awareness about the problem of bullying but don't have a real zero tolerance. Berkley.edu believes zero tolerance policy is not the best way to confront bullying and stop it at the source. Studies have shown having a positive school environment and open one where students feel safe is the best way to confront bullying.

In a safe area, people will feel more comfortable to come forward to a trusted adult or bystanders will stand up for an individual being bullied. Us as a society should create a safe culture where it is the normal to stand up for individuals and give them a voice so they don't feel alone.

Today, we as a community need to take a stand against bullying. If we allow the school to not punish the bully, it will continue. Bullying causes long-lasting effects on those involved, and in order to save those kids from the damage bullying causes awareness must be raised. The parents allow the school to take slack and the bullying cycle continues.
